Weekly update: a finish and a start from With Strings Attached

It's sometimes hard to realize that just three years ago most of us had never Zoomed.   This week I had three Zoom sessions --  on Wednesday,ALA Freedom to Read Foundation (two screens of participants); on Saturday, AAUW-Illinois winter board meeting; and on Sunday, Retired Members Round Table Fifth Sunday Book Club. ("Biography" was the prompt for this session.  Our choices were eclectic, from Maus to Prince Harry to Jimmy Buffett.)

I made16 framed four-patch blocks in each of the monthly colors for the 2021 Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  I set the blocks last year.  Now they're a quilt!  60 ...

A, B, Sea and YAY!!! from Sew Preeti Quilts

A is for Abacus.

Abacus is a bonus quilt made from leftover triangles while making the RSC blocks this year.  I made a total of 30 Sister's Choice blocks, resulting in 60 bonus blocks. In the pictures below you can see how the herd grew.

In the beginning

Red ones

Purple Ones

It grows!

Almost there

Finished Flimsy

Baste, shall we?

Finished!!!

Since the leftovers triangles had bias edges the blocks are wonky which is just perfect for a baby quilt :-) Abacus finished at 39" by 41" and I am very happy with it.  Here are a few close ...

Weekly update: wildflowers, monarchs, baskets, RSC, and reading from With Strings Attached

Not-too-hot and not-too-humid meant comfortable forest preserve walks this week.  We stayed close to home (Spring Bluff), twelve miles (Raven Glen West), and 35 miles (Heron Creek).  Just south of Heron Creek is Reed-Turner Woodland Preserve owned by the Long Grove Park District.  A nice bonus!

Right: a monarch and a bee with compass plant.

Sawtooth sunflower, tall boneset, goldenrod. Jewelweed, false aster, Drummond's aster. Panicled aster, grass-leaf goldenrod, purplestem aster.

Friday update: design change, interrupted (RSC) from With Strings Attached

A wildflower medley at Van Patten Woods

Barn Quilts was the topic at the Zoom quilt guild meeting on Wednesday. Suzi Parron has traveled across the country to document these bold outdoor art installations.  She says there are at least 16,000 barn quilts and the list keeps growing.

I made a significant design change on the wedding quilt that required  three evenings with the seam ripper.  I'll show you the details in the Weekly Update next Monday.

To keep my spirits from flagging I took a break and made and finished a quick project.  Here are the 16 ...

Midweek: Stash report, RSC, OMG from With Strings Attached

I woke up at 4:00 this morning, muttered "Rabbit, rabbit," and woke up again at 6:00.  Here is why.  (I first learned about RR in a Trixie Belden book I read when I was 11.  Only in more recent years have I said it each month. Maybe I need good luck more these days?)

The Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania are huge and absolutely beautiful, but still a few hours from me.

The Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC are more accessible and I don't mind the long train ride although I will avoid the nightmarish parking in downtown DC.

From 2008. My first time :-)

So beautiful

Due to their popularity and the huge crowds (then), everyone was photobombing someone else's picture. The best pictures were taken ...

The Positivity QAL - Sponsors from Sew Preeti Quilts

The Positivity Quilt-Along (QAL) begins on Sunday, May 30, 2021.

While you wrap up your current projects, clean the bobbins, pick up the stray pins and change the blade in your rotary cutters, I am busy writing the tutorial and debating (sometimes silently) layout options.

Here are the gifts/prizes we have gleefully secured for the Positivity QAL. Kudos to the sponsors!!!

LEVEL 1 (Flimsy)
All QAL participants (anywhere in the world) who link up their finished flimsies will be entered to win one of the following four Level 1 prizes

egret at Sedge Meadow Savanna
The downside to the sunny days we've enjoyed is that there has been NO rain. Everything is green because it's springtime, but we are edging toward drought.  On Monday the tree guys took down a Colorado blue spruce in the back yard that looked sick last year and looked sicker this year.  The landscaper said the condition was needle cast and explained that Colorado spruces are planted here because they grow fast. After a certain point (35 years?) they fail to thrive in the heavy clay soil.  Removing the tree left a sunny ...

Island Batik - April Challenge from Sew Preeti Quilts

Me: How is it?
Paul (mildly irritated): What?
Me (irritated): Your breakfast...that I just brought you, my lord.
Paul: I am still alive, am I not?
Me (through gritted teeth): In that case, let me get you another serving.
Paul (calmly): It is good to have goals.
Me: If you want me to cook for you then you need to tell me that you LIKE my cooking.
Paul: I will...AFTER I finish eating it.

Let's ignore Paul for now.

April 2021 is a free month which means that it is all up to me - any project, any ...

Weekly update: Easter, stash report, a finish, RSC, OMG, and reading from With Strings Attached

Happy Easter!

It's been a busy week!

We are fully Pfizerized.  Our second vaccinations were at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.  We were fortunate that our appointments were convenient -- just three miles down Sheridan Road in Zion at CTCA.

Beautiful spring weather was a great opportunity for  visiting two forest preserves -- Rollins Savanna on Friday and Lyons Woods on Saturday.

The arch in this fallen oak (Rollins Savanna) looked like a portal. I didn't want to take any chances of what might happen if I went through it.

We saw a pair of cranes at Illinois Beach State ...

Weekly update: hints of spring, multiple projects, and reading from With Strings Attached

March began with a flurry of activities.  On Wednesday we got our first Covid vaccine shots at CTCA, the hospital in Zion. It was quick and we had no side effects. The second shot is scheduled for March 31.

On Saturday evening we went to the first indoor concert in exactly a year. (The last time was March 7, 2020.)  Only 50 people were in attendance with ample social distancing. The Lake County Symphony Orchestra featured a percussionist (marimba and vibraphone) and a brass quintet.

Spring is in the air with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures. . It was great ...

Like Sex but Better from Sew Preeti Quilts

Picture this - a warm, sunny day on a beach. Blue skies with just a tiny cloud or two, and the aquamarine waters are neither warm nor cold. And there I am in a hammock made up of your sweet comments, gently cradling me. That is how I feel; thank you for your hugs. I love you and I feel loved!!!

Greens on the Color Wheel

According to Angela, March is Green.  She did not specify light or dark, bright or dingy. So here they are.
All the greens in five blocks total.

Weekly Update: scrappy, trippy pinwheels from With Strings Attached

(c) Jen Kingwell

In 2019 I made 360 pinwheels for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. They've been in a box waiting for the right opportunity to become a quilt.

That opportunity came when I read Jen Kingwell's book Quilt Lovely, I bought a copy after attending the virtual program she gave for NSQG last month,    The strong vertical columns on neutral really appealed to me. Note that hers has three different kinds of pinwheels.

Each column of 6" pinwheels turned out to be about 80 x 18 inches.  I had enough neutral (subtle plaid) homespun for the setting triangles ...

January rainbow round up from With Strings Attached

For Joy's Table Scraps challenge:  I made two pink potholders.

I also made some framed four-patch blocks. (5.5" unfinished)

Last year I made half-square triangles in each of the 10 monthly RSC colors.  Because I used 5" squares to make the HSTs it was convenient to make two identical HSTs-- 4.5" unfinished.  One pair of squares for each day of the month meant an average of 60 HSTs.    Here is what happened to 270 of the 600.

The blocks are 12" and the quilt is 60 x 72.

I used up a few colorful prints for the ...

Weekly Update: making history (with mittens), pink and more pink, Grassy Creek!, and reading from With Strings Attached

It was beautiful at the beach when I snapped the photo but at 19 degrees I didn't linger!  The clouds have returned and there's snow in the forecast.

Years ago I read a time management book that likened the results of procrastination to an obstacle that gets bigger around as the procrastination continues - so big that it takes more effort to go around it than it would be to just go over it.  That's how I've been with a non-quilting project this week that involved report-writing and statistics-compiling. I have to check to see that all ...

Weekly update: some pink, OMG, and a squirrel from With Strings Attached

Lynn and I have known one another since kindergarten. We reconnected last year on our high school class's 50th reunion FB group.  She joined me on Tuesday for a hike at Illinois Beach State Park. It was a pleasant 3-mile catching-up.

Wednesday my husband and I went out to discover a new-to-us segment of the lakefront bike trail.  It was so calm -- in great contrast to the upheaval in Washington, D.C. which we watched on the news, horrified.

(You can tell it's a different day by the color of my turtleneck. :) )

The sun was out on Saturday ...

Weekly update: project updates, OMG, and more from With Strings Attached

Our first forest preserve outings of the year -- Spring Bluff on Saturday and Van Patten Woods on Sunday.

Enough people had walked along the trails to pack down the snow so I didn't flounder.

Left collage: red-wing blackbird nest, a gravity defying limb, horsetails.

Right collage: gull tracks in the sand.

I've collected/accumulated household textiles for many years. In 2019 I sold nearly all of the aprons in a yard sale. In 2020 I cut up vintage tablecloths to make tote bags (see them here).   This year I'm assessing the dish towels.  I will keep those ...
